Collecting Methods and Specimen Tracking

Everyone collecting specimens in the Park is required to obtain a collecting permit. This can be applied for online on the National Park Service Research Permit and Reporting System.

A wide variety of methods are used in the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory for collecting specimens. Regardless of the approach, be sure to:
- Have your collecting permit with you.
- Collect only what you need for the project.
- Keep careful records, including field notes, labels, and geo-referenced data (see Guidelines for Collecting GPS Data).
- Follow directions closely.
- Preserve specimens properly.
- Return your collection promptly.
