Information Page for Melanitta fusca (White-winged scoter)

Photographer: Menke, Dave

Scoters are mostly ducks of the ocean coast or the Great Lakes, but they occasionally show up on area lakes and reservoirs during the winter and migration.

The single park record is of an immature bird in the sewage treatment ponds in Cades Cove, mid-November 1989. Another immature bird was seen two miles outside of the park in January of 1942 near Townsend, Tennessee.
