The Smokies are well south of the normal wintering range of this northern, tree-nesting duck. They are seldom seen on area lakes, but there are four records from within the park and a few records from just outside the park.
Park records, first three from Stupka (1963), are: Abrams Creek at the park boundary, February 1940; the Little River, December 1940; the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, November 1961, and Cades Cove in mid-March 1985.
