Information Page for Mergus serrator (Red-breasted merganser)

Photographer: Hays, Lana

The Red-breasted Merganser winters mostly on salt water, but individuals are regularly recorded in migration or over the winter at inland sites.

Park records (Stupka 1963) are from the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River just north of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, on the park Spur (November 1940) and a partial carcass recovered from a Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) nest near Alum Cave Bluffs in May of 1931.
