Information Page for Calcarius ornatus (Chestnut-collared longspur)

This species is normally restricted to the upper great planes states in summer and the southern planes and southwestern states in the winter.

A single individual was observed on the grassy bald by Purchase Knob in May of 2001. It is not expected to be seen again in the park, as the Smokies are so far outside of its range and there is not a great amount of grassland habitat to attract it.
