The larvae (maggots) of this fly feed on dead animals (carrion). It is sometimes used in determining the time of death of an animal.
It is found throughout the United States and Europe.
It prefers temperatures of 55 to 75 deg F, so is most likely found in the Spring and Fall in the Smokies.
