The bluegill, sometimes referred to as bream, or just sunfish, is mostly associated with farm ponds, but its adaptability allows it to inhabit larger and/or warmer flowing waters.
Appearance: Light blue to dark gray on its back and sides, and up to 10 inches in length. The younger fish have an obvious dark blotch on the posterior soft dorsal fin. This fades somewhat in older individuals.
Habitat: the bluegill prefers ponds, lakes and reservoirs, but may be found in larger flowing waters as well.
Park Info: In the park, it can be found in Abrams Creek, Little Tennessee River, Oconaluftee River, Twentymile Creek embayment, and other reservoirs.
