The Red-necked phalarope has been detected in the park on three occasions, at least one of which as a result of a strong passing storm.
Two Red-necked phalaropes were seen for two day in the Cades Cove sewage treatment lagoons in late August of 1989 and for one day in early January 1992; two individuals were seen at the same location after Tropical Storm Ivan passed by the park in mid-September 2004.
