This common, spiny member of the potato family, and nightshade genus, is ordinarily found in disturbed areas and open fields. Look for a full, branched, approximately two foot tall plant with richly green, spiny folliage and 5-pedal flowers of pale violet to white color. Its fruit consists of yellow berries that are quite poisonous if eaten.

It can be found from May through September throughout the Eastern United States.
